Obituary of Nancy Middleton Malay

Nancy Sophia Middleton Malay, (April 11, 1932- March 30, 2017) Loving aunt, great aunt, sister, widow, neighbor, and community member, was born April 11,1932 in Edinburg, Indiana growing up there with many extended family members and four sisters, until her father, John Middleton, died when his car was hit by a train. Then her mother (formerly Rowene Elizabeth Baker) moved her and two younger sisters to Boulder, Co. where Nancy went to high school. She entered University of Colorado majoring in anthropology. Nancy’s BA was interrupted when she became a stewardess for United Airlines. She was sometimes stationed in NYC and Hawaii but worked primarily out of Denver for 19 years. She met Daniel Malay, a marine pilot, at the World’s Fair in NYC. where they were both working. They were married in Hawaii and they lived there for a few years in Kaneohe and where Nancy finally finished her degree majoring in philosophy. After Dan retired they settled in Parker, Co., building a home of their own design on 9 acres of land, where Nancy continued to live after Dan passed away in 1982 until her own death due to health complications and cancer at the age of 84 on March 30, 2017. She entertained family members with her phenomenal memory and attention to detail. She had an encyclopedic knowledge of supplements and nutrition, successfully arguing with nurses in rehab for her ability to self diagnose and her right to take the supplements she thought necessary for her health. She was legal guardian to her special needs sister Lois, and oversaw her loving care until Lois passed away. Assertive and determined, she lived her life “her way”. Very involved with the wildlife around her country home, she told many stories of her encounters with the deer, birds and chipmunks and other wildlife and a deep appreciation for the natural wonders of the world. Always ready to laugh, she had a whimsical ability to deliver a humorous scenario with keen insight and wit. Her mind remained sharp and intact through to the last days of her life. She was a past President of the DEN Clipped Wings Chapter (1985-1987), Nancy's happiest memories were co-piloting with Dan in his private plane. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, where Nancy will also rest. During her term as President of the Chapter, Nancy initiated involvement with Praying Hands Ranch, a facility for riding therapy for children with special needs, and more recently, offers therapy for veterans. Nancy was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Newcomers Club in Parker, CO, and the Society of Military Widows as well as CW.
