I got to know Al in 1996. I was a guest seminary student from Germany and was able to visit Joy Lutheran. Al was from day one my dear friend and mentor. I owe him a great deal, I miss him. I just learned today about his passing. Dear Al, thank you so much for all the love you gave to this world. You were a wonderful servant of God and surely he has called you home.
Bis bald mein Freund! Jens Liedtke-Siems, Rev.

My thoughts and prayers are with Al's entire family. After reading all the many messages here you really can see how much Al was respected and loved. The best part about him was his humor and how much he really loved to be around people. I met Al at the Denver Birds Meetings and even though I did not know him over many years I felt like and knew he was a true friend from the first day I met him. Many times I came to the Birds Meeting early and would get to talk with Al before the meeting. I really enjoyed this time with him. Al loved to tell flying stories and jokes and the best part was the laughter he had. Al served as the Denver Birds Secretary for a very long time. He was very dedicated and loyal to everything he committed to do. If it was not for Al our Birds Group may never have survived, thanks Al. In recent months I was unable to attend meetings and have not seen or spoke with him and this I very much regret. I sure will miss you Captain Snook. I hope your flight West for a final check is smooth and clear. Al you won't be forgotten.

I flew with Al as a FO on the 737 for a month here and there quite a while ago. Al is a great Captain and a great pilot as well as a great mentor in his role as Airline Captain. I appreciated all the excellent input in the airline things as well as the great layover comradery. Al was a generous and authentic individual. Semper Fi from an AF guy as you head out for your next big adventure.

I met Al a little over seven years ago when he showed up at the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in the basement of Joy Lutheran Church on Saturday morning. He was there every Saturday since unless he was out of town or undergoing cancer treatment. We immediately hit it off due to the additional bond of being airline pilots.
Al asked me to be his sponsor (mentor) in AA, and help him get sober. Al embraced his sobriety the same way he embraced his faith, his family, his career at United Airlines, and the USMC. A friend of mine in AA once said "My job as your sponsor is to show you how to get sober and be of service to others so that you will know how to be there for me when I am in crisis". When I dealt with the loss of my daughter last year on top of a failed romantic relationship, Al was there for me. Not because I taught him that, but because that is who Al was....
The last few days of Al's life in the Hospice, I met several pilots from United Airlines who were so grateful for the careers Al probably saved as part of the United Airlines Training Committee. That is who Al was....
After Al retired from United and "joined" AA, he became involved in a program for pilots recovering from alcohol and drug addiction. He picked the guys and girls up from the treatment center at Parker Valley Hope (just around the corner from Joy Lutheran Church), and made sure they got to the pilot only AA meeting on Monday morning. At United Airlines, Al saved careers, but he probably help save as many pilot's lives in AA as he did careers at United. That is who Al was....
It is only fitting that we celebrate Al's life on the same day as we celebrate the start of the 2016 NFL season with the Denver Broncos home opener later in the evening. I know Al will be watching that game with "the man upstairs" because he loved the Broncos too. That is who Al was....
I will miss you Buddy. I love you. Semper Fi.

As a B-727 Captain with United I flew many trips with Al as co-pilot. He was a very competent pilot and his wit and humor made the trips enjoyable. I also dealt with him in his capacity as ALPA Training Committee Chairman. Taking on that position was typical of Al's concern for others. Having lost my wife within the past year I can relate to the void his passing leaves in the lives of you, his family. He will be missed but remembered with fondness by those who knew him.

Al was a constant and stabilizing force in my life throughout our time in the training command. I had a propensity to want to party every night and Al would convince me to study a little and spit shine my shoes. After we finished Basic at Meridian Al and I drove to my house in Illinois and Al spent the night before driving on to Iowa. My mom loved it and rolled out the feed bag as she was prone to do. Rhys, Al and I were best of Buds thru Basic but Rhys went to Kingsville for Advanced and Tom Redmond replaced Rhys as the third leg of the triumvirate. Corinne and I got married at El Toro and Al and Rhys were both in the wedding.
I was later Stationed Patuxent Riverand got to know Col Roy Gray, who was the CO of VMA-211, and he told me that transferring Al out of the squadron was one of the hardest things he ever had to do. Apparently the wing forced Col Gray to transfer Al to make room for a Major from the wing staff.
Al was one of the best friends I had in my 20 years in the Marine Corps, This is a most difficult note for me to write for he will be missed. Fair wind and following sea old friend until we meet again.

We moved away from Parker in 2013, and I can still hear his voice, always cheerful, "How's it going kiddo". Always smiling. BIG HUGS TO YOU TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY MARCIA!! What an awesome man! Al was my mentor at United Airlines where I was the local Training Chairman and he was on the Training Committee for the entire pilot community. He personally saved the careers of many pilots, but never took credit for it. He always commended us, even though he was the driving force. We had good times together over the years, but sadly not recently. I will always remember his greeting (Jimmmeeeee) whenever he called or sent an email, and I referred to him as "Capitan Al." Semper Fi, my good friend.

Al was our Boyscout leader for about 5-6 years back in the early 1980's, All had such a great demeanor & was liked by everyone who ever met him. He always had a smile on his face & seemed to make the best out of every situation. He inspired all of us to Dream big & we could achieve great things...I really appreciate all of the time & dedication All devoted to all of us & we all learned a lot about life in those years. We all turned out alright ;) Al inspired me to fulfill my boyhood dreams of being a Pilot. Years later when I was in college, I reached out to Al, he was kind enough to write me a very heartfelt professional letter to help me get considered for the United Airlines Internship. I will never forget that. He will be missed, Many Prayers for the entire Snook family Brett, Jill & all of the grandkids... Godspeed Al!! RIP buddy!

Al was a VMA-211 squadron-mate at El Toro. The only highly rated boy scout I've ever known. A "spit and polish" Marine. His vocal delivery was sincere but had good doses of sarcasm and wit. Such was the case when, at a squadron re-union, he told our Commanding Officer that he really did not " hold a grudge " for being transferred on short notice out of the squadron to forward air controller duty in Vietnam.
Carol and I offer our condolences to Marcia and family.

As a former Marine Corps pilot, I knew Al very well. We went through flight training
together with Gary Post. We became sort of a threesome. After we got our Naval Aviation wings of gold, we were assigned to the Marine Corps El Torro air base at Tustin, California. Al and Gary held swords when my wife, Gail, and I were married. We needed housing there so Al and I rented an apartment and shared the duties. I was the chef and he was the cleanup guy. Hey, hamburger patty, frozen corn and lettuce with Thousand Island dressing. Night after night! Those were great times and somehow we lived through it. He had such a calm and stabilizing personality. After he was in the United Airlines training department, I asked him to talk to our son, Bret, a private pilot about employment as a United Airlines pilot. He met with Bret and really encouraged him. Today Bret is a United pilot. So, Godspeed Al and Semper Fi.

I was privileged to know Al from the time he joined VMA-211 through his career at United. My favorite remembrance of him is when our son, took a decided turn for the worse, he and Marcia took over for us with no hesitation, allowing us to drop everything and leave. It just shows what kind of thoughtful, helpful people they are.

I had the pleasure of flying the 727 with Captain Snook at United and always looked forward to seeing Al because of his infectious laugh and wry sense of humor. He taught his crews to be professional because he led by example and anyone who flew with him saw what that meant. The awards he received were no surprise to those who knew him. What a delightful Captain and a true gentleman we have all lost.
Rest in Peace, Al.
My sincerest condolences to his family.

Al Snook was a good Marine, a fine A-4 Pilot and a great human being. I was a first tour "nugget" (newly minted Naval Aviator) with Al in Marine Attack Squadron 211, aboard Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, CA in 1964-5. As Al was reporting in, we had a splendid group that was stabilizing personnel for an upcoming overseas deployment. Al got to the squadron a little later that most of us but he "worked hard, played enough, thought fast, and hung tough" thereby earning our respect for his even keel approach to the toughest challenges. Although a fully qualified A-4 pilot, as we embarked a ship in May 1964, taking us to Viet Nam, he was plucked from our squadron to serve as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) with the Ground Combat Element. He served with valor and distinction in that job and even controlled many of us as we supported his infantry battalion with Close Air Support. Al was cool, matter of fact as he controlled our ordnance drops. We all finally got together a few years ago and enjoyed reminiscing with Al and learning about his well-lived life. We are all saddened by his loss.
He will be missed. - Semper Fidelis, Larry "Hobart" Adkinson

I served with Al when he was assigned to VMA-211 at El Toro, California. Al was a great Marine and certainly enjoyed flying the A-4 Skyhawk. He left the squadron just before we deployed to Japan an on to Chu Lai Vietnam.
Al would come down to Chu Lai to get his flight time with us. He was such a great young man, that I really enjoyed over the years. We did not get to see each other over the years except at Squadron reunions, however, my family moved to Iowa and we would often talk on getting together when he came back to visited.
He will be missed but always remebered.
