Obituary of Unita D. Courns

Unita Delores Courns (77), was called to heaven on Sunday, October 4, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. Unita was born on January 20, 1943 to Clara Walker and Curtis Wimes in Sikeston, Missouri as the eldest of three children. The family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where she was raised, shortly after she was born.

Unita met and married Johnny Courns on March 13, 1959 (married for 61 years). She immediately became an Air Force wife. They had six loving children and traveled together as a military family. They were stationed in Louisiana twice, North Dakota, Alaska, Nebraska (twice) and California. When Johnny was deployed to Thailand, Unita temporarily moved in with her mother in Brooklyn, New York.

After her husband retired from the Air Force, they moved their family to Greenville, Texas. Unita worked at Travis Elementary school as a lunch assistant and worked with special needs’ students. The principal at Travis Elementary school moved to Lamar Elementary school and took Unita with him because of the great work she was doing. He knew how much she loved children and how much they loved her.

Unita loved spending time with her family and this was her ultimate joy. She also enjoyed camping, decorating, cooking, reading, gardening, bowling, watching sports, and music. Unita and Johnny loved camping so much, they adopted the Texas Longhorn Camping group as their second family and Unita served as secretary for a year.

She is survived by her husband, Johnny Courns, daughters Dorrey Sanders, Janel Bravo, JoJo Courns, Kelly (Merrick) Hidalgo and Zara (Keith) Swingle; son John Courns; grandchildren Aundrea (Josh) Basham, Jade Courns-Bravo, Kaelyn Sanders, Reese Bravo, Ryland Courns, Avery Hidalgo, Elli Hidalgo and Zoe Hidalgo; great grandchildren Lauryn Bailey, Jaiya Butler and Kynzlee Basham; brother Eddie (Sherri) Wimes and numerous other friend and family.

She is preceded in death by her father Curtis Wimes; mother Clara Phillips; and brother Curtis Wimes Jr.
