I always enjoyed seeing my mom’s (Betty) cousin, who I knew as Aunt Alice, at our extended family get togethers. The earliest of these I can recall were held in the Chicago area forest preserves and at Sons of Norway, a small private resort near Phil’s Lake, north of Chicago, consisting of 6-10 small bungalows with screened in porches where the kids often slept. Later, the extended Henningsen family would often gather at the original Russell’s on Thatcher Road. It had been a young adult hang out for my mom’s and Alice’s generation, though not necessarily as family, more with friends, dates and as young married couples. When we started gathering there in 2000s, various cousins would show up and it was an opportunity to hear stories from their pasts and about the generations before them. Alice was always full of laughter and her warmth enveloped whoever showed up - especially those of from younger generations. She was quick with a fun story or bawdy reference but she always spoke with love and appreciation. As she got older and her health started to decline, she would speak in more somber tones about her particular struggles physically. Walking became painful and she was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. But Alice rarely complained, instead she turned her attention to the things she was grateful for and asked about others’ well being, jobs, children, and futures. I loved Aunt Alice for her seemingly uncomplicated and straight forward nature though I did not know her well. She was approachable, kind and jubilant in her way. I will remember her big personality and loud blasts of laughter as she tossed quips across the table. With her truly one-of-a-kind mix of humor and gusto, she painted a picture and in that moment brought to life people and events from the family’s past that we all could feel and take in. What a gift she was! Thank you Aunt Alice for all the fun and love you brought to us. We will miss you.

I am very thankful everyday that I had the opportunity to spend time with this wonderful woman. I will never forget the laughs and the cries we had together. She taught me so many things and always had a smile on her face and I’m very blessed. My prayers go out to her wonderful family. You will be missed alice! -Brianna Googins (Morningstar staff)

We all loved Alice more then words could ever explain. She was the light, the laughter, and the peace maker of our facility. She touched all of our hearts. Ill never ever forget our mornings together and the songs we would sing to start our day. Prayers to the family, thank you again for sharing such an amazing person with all of us.

Alice and Whitey were great friends and in-laws, they helped me get through some trying times while still reminding me the world was good and worth a smile everyday.❣️
