Obituary of Ira L. Philson, Jr

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our loving and devoted husband and father, Ira L. Philson Jr, age 50, of Aurora, CO on Thursday, March 16, 2023.  

Ira, born on April 6, 1972, in Baton Rouge, LA, was the son of Ira Philson, Sr., Daisy Philson Elsey and Elvin Elsey.

He is survived by his wife, Carrie Philson; children, Lauren, Olivia, Miles, and Elle; his mother, Daisy, and many loving extended family members.

Recruited to play soccer at Creighton University, Ira earned several accolades and in 2003, he was inducted into the Creighton University Athletics Hall of Fame.

After graduating from Creighton with a Bachelor of Arts degree in May 1994, Ira was an assistant coach with the Bluejay men's soccer team. In July 1995, he was named head coach of the CU women's soccer team.

June 12, 1998, Ira married the love of his life, Carrie. He and Carrie went on to have four beautiful children.

Ira held many titles in his life, from coach to mentor but his favorite role was being a father. He loved nothing more than spending time with his children. He was always there for them, whether he was helping Miles train for an upcoming season, proudly attending Lauren’s performance in Memphis, sharing loving words to Olivia attending her first year in college, or cheering for Elle at her volleyball championship. Ira boldly pursued the Lord and lead his family with love and integrity.

He was preceded in death by his Father, Ira Philson Sr., stepfather Elvin Elsey; Grandparents, Martha and Lawrence Philson Jr., and Susie and Alex McNeil.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Highpoint Church, 6450 S. Southlands Pkwy, Aurora, CO. Funeral Services will be held next week in Baton Rouge, LA, with burial being held at Southern Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers for the Memorial Service this weekend in the Denver area, the family has asked that you consider making a donation to a scholarship fund that is being pursued at his alma mater, Creighton University, in Ira's name. This will take some time to get set-up thus please stay tuned as further details will follow soon.
