Obituary of Sally Baum
Sally Anne Baum, age 83, of Parker, CO, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2023. She was born on April 13, 1940, in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Ethel (Gaffney) and John Evancho.
She lived in her childhood home in the town of Ebervale, Pennsylvania for the first three decades of her life, working as a bookkeeper at Village Furniture Mart and for her father while he served as Tax Collector for Hazle Township, before marrying Clarence T. “John” Baum, of Hazleton, Pennsylvania in May 1972. The couple made their first home in Maryland before John’s service in the United States Air Force took them to Berlin, West Germany later that same year. There, Sally and John welcomed two children, Susan Lynne and Christopher John, before returning stateside.
In 1976 the family welcomed a third child, Steven Edward, while stationed in Colorado. John’s service next took the family to Maui, Hawaii, where John and Sally grew to consider many of the other service members stationed there with them as the extended family they had not been born with. The bonds formed there lasted a lifetime.
From Hawaii, John’s service took the family to Las Vegas, Nevada, where they spent the final year of his twenty-year Air Force career. While there, Sally’s last-second addition of an extra note in a Christmas card to one of John’s former commanding officers opened the next chapter in their lives, as the officer’s immediate response led to John’s second career, with Lockheed, in Mountain View, California. Nine years later, when John asked Sally how she would feel about returning to Colorado as part of a job relocation she told him, “Give me ten minutes to pack our bags.”
After moving with John to Parker, Colorado, in September 1995, Sally would spend her remaining years in her beloved Colorado, developing deep friendships with another set of families thrown together into a new environment by relocation for work. She grew to consider many of these new friends as additional extended family, becoming over the years “Mama Sally” or “Baba Sally” to her new friends’ children and grandchildren.
Sally was a deeply devout Catholic, who took to heart the call to service, volunteering much of her time and energy to caring for others. She particularly enjoyed her role as a Eucharistic Minister, taking communion to those in rehabilitation or extended care living facilities, spending untold hours over that time in conversation with ill, temporarily incapacitated, recuperating, or otherwise disabled fellow Catholics.
She charmed everyone she met, her sleight stature belying a feistiness and quick wit that caught many off guard but left them laughing regardless. Sally’s love of spending time with her friends and family contributed to her living up to a warning her father had given John when he asked for her hand in marriage: “She’s got roller-skates on her behind.”
Sally loved a good breakfast out (lunch and dinner out for that matter, too) with family and friends, so much so that the servers and managers of many Parker-area restaurants knew without prompting to bring her hot tea with lemon. Earl Grey, if they had it. They also knew better than to attempt to take away any unfinished potatoes. Her children deemed her “The Queen of Parker,” in part because each (rare) instance where they would venture into one of these restaurants without her inevitably resulted in someone, whether servers or another patron, asking them “Where’s your mom?”
Sally led a life well-lived, her infinite kindness and generosity touching the lives of all who met her, as well as many who never did. She has left the best kind of impact on the world and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her children and daughters-in-law, Susan Baum, of Parker, Colorado, Christopher Baum & Ruth Decalo, of Providence, Rhode Island, and Steven Baum & Ainsley Bochniak (and one baby granddaughter due in January 2024), of Denver, Colorado. She also leaves many cousins and close friends who became family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Clarence T. “John” Baum, on February 25, 2012.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at Ave Maria Catholic Church. Rosary will be held thirty minutes prior, from 10:30-11:00, at the church. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Fort Logan National Cemetery.
