Marcus Wiley

Obituary of Marcus A. Wiley

Marcus Arthur Wiley passed away on Saturday, October 28, at the age of 67 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born to Shelley Woolman Wiley and Otto Odell Wiley on August 4, 1950 in Gallup, New Mexico. The family moved to Farmington, New Mexico when Mark was 12 years old. He graduated from Farmington High School in 1968. Even as a child, Mark was determined to succeed. When he was in the third grade he told his parents he was going to study at New Mexico Tech. He didn’t apply to any other schools and graduated with a degree in Mining Engineering in 1972. He was hired by Consolidation Coal Company and the job took him to Ohio. Mark regularly received bulletins from the Church of Christ back home in Farmington. A postal employee took notice of the nature of Mark’s mail and decided to play matchmaker. She introduced this fine, young Christian man to Kathy Mills of nearby Cadiz. Sparks flew and they were married six months later on March 3, 1973. Mark founded Wiley Engineering in 1981 which later became Wiley Consulting, LLC. He was continuously learning, growing and teaching others through his work. Mark loved cars: working on them, driving them, and collecting them. He used this and other hobbies to spend time with friends and build relationships. He was an avid collector of gems and minerals. He especially enjoyed sharing these interests with kids. Mark was an extremely generous man. In Genesis 12:12 God said to Abram, “I will bless you… and you will be a blessing.” Mark truly lived by the principle that we are blessed in order to bless. His generosity has impacted thousands of people all over the world. He invested in people; not because he wanted something from them, just because he loved them. One friend said of Mark, “He was more like Jesus than anyone I have ever known.” Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.” We have all been impacted by Mark, and because of his influence we are more like Christ. Mark is preceded in death by his parents, infant twin brothers Terrance and Lawrence, and sister Alyce Wiley. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his son Kent (Amy), daughters Kari Curo (Steven), Kaci Cotton (Adam), and Kimberly Hensal (Josh). He dearly loved his 12 grandchildren: Carli, Caleb, Cotter, Kinsey, Brett, Lillian, Keely, Kennedy, Anna Kate, Carson, Kody and Marlee. Two sisters, Lynda Wadsworth and Jenna Wiley, reside in Albuquerque. He also has many beloved aunts and cousins.
