Jim was my great uncle, and I did not see him very often, although I did hear many stories from my mother. My heart is so full to know he had many wonderful memories he shared with the Root family. May he rest in eternal peace.

We will not be able to attend the services today, but are having a mass said for Uncle Jim at St. Mary Catholic Church in Rifle, which we are attending. We feel very fortunate to have visited with Jim two weeks before he passed.
My mom Dora Campbell was Jim's sister. Growing up he visited us at the Gaylord house when we lived with my grandparents' Elbert and Luz. He was always kind to me, and many times helped give me direction, since my father was never in the picture. Through my adult life, we continued to visit periodically, and he always was there to give fatherly advice, stern but kind. I will miss my Uncle Jim, but hope now he is at rest with his brother, sisters, and parents.
I am also very grateful that Jim was able to meet such a wonderful person as is Colleen, and spend many happy years together. It is clear he became an important part of the Root family.

Jim (James Campbell) was a great man who I am honored to have known and have him as a part or our family for my entire life. We had always referred referred to James as Uncle Jim though he was really more like a grandfather to me. He had been with my grandmother Colleen for years before I was born and always treated her like a queen. Jim was one of the most respectable men I have ever know. He was and incredibly hard worker, a loving “husband” who loved my grandmother to no end, and he risked his life defending our country and he will part of me and our family that we will never forget. I will never forget hearing his incredible war stories. I remember him singing Felis Navidad many times around Christmas and he’d sound just like the radio. Jim was always such a bright light. He was always happy so see and talk to you with a big smile on his face. I look up to Jim as the loving respectable hard working man he was. He was always someone i looked up to and I strive to be the type of man that he was. Jim has really touched my and my family’s life and we miss you so much. Rest In Peace Jim and thank you for your services and sacrifices and for all that you have taught me in my life.

I will never forget the first time I met Jim. It was Friday april 3rd 1990. I had a commercial building cleaning business in Parker and I would go to El Valle to eat before I cleaned every evening. I was greeted by a man (James Campbell) who was wearing a brown suit and tie. He was helping Jesus Pena who had just bought the restaurant. I had known Jesus since 1986. My daughter even asked if the restaurant greeter was single because she noticed him looking at her mom. We began having conversations and that led to an amazing 29.5 years! A close friend of mine said " 11 years of eating burritos you finally met a man!"
Jim invited me to go with him to his class of 1943 2nd Tuesday lunch gatherings That went on for over 10 years. It was a wonderful time of meeting Jim's class mates and thier spouses.
I also went with Jim to the Shell retirement gatherings wich were held at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal and other places.
Jim had an amazing scientific ability as well as a fun and romantic side.
I will miss Jim's companionship, his serenading me with songs in both English and Spanish and our almost daily lunches at La Casita.
Rest in peace Jim until we meet again. I love you!- Colleen

I forgot mention how much Jim loved his cats! He almost always had his cat beside him in his chair. His last cat Chloe slept with him in bed.

We will miss Jim so much. He was such a great man. I loved him as my step dad. He was my moms "other half" for over 29 years. Jim was happily accepted into our family. I loved hearing about his experiences in World War 2, it would bring tears to his eyes st times. We also heard a lot about his job at Shell oil company. He was a walking encyclopedia of information from health to politics. I had a lot of faith in what he had to say, after all less than 8 years ago he got on the floor to prove how strong he was and started doing push ups! Christmas time he would decorate my moms(Colleens) house and even set up a train in the living room. He was a kid at heart. A couple years ago I came out and asked them if I could drive them around to see Christmas lights. We drove around Parker for over 3hrs and 100 miles! He didnt want to stop. Jim had such an amazing memory, he could recite jokes all night long. He would randomly start singing songs and he had a great voice. He sang the last song to mom and I just 2 weeks ago from his hospice bed. I love you Jim and already miss you so much.
