Obituary of Carol J. Sparling

Carol J. Sparling
April 7, 1936 - November 8, 2020

Born in Denver, Colorado, but raised in Spokane, Washington, Carol had a long, loving and gracious life.

Carol graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane in 1954 and shortly thereafter met her future husband of 58 years, Darryl 'Bud' Sparling, at the University of Washington in Seattle where she graduated with a degree in BS in Dietetics and Nutrition in 1959. As a Registered Dietician she both raised 3 children and supported Bud's nomadic career in the US Army. After retiring with Bud to Aurora, Colorado in 1981, she attended University of Northern Colorado and received a Master’s degree in Family Counseling in 1992.

Carol made great use of her counseling gifts by providing spiritual guidance and counseling ministry to 100's of missionaries, laity, and church professionals around the world. She and Bud traveled to 6 of the 7 continents and over 90 countries while serving as chaplains for Youth for Christ (YFC) and leaders with the Military Community Youth Ministries (MCYM) between 1993 - 2010. Her quiet, stylish, and gracious personality was deeply felt in many christian congregations in the Denver metro area including Faith Presbyterian, Parker Evangelical Presbyterian Church (PEPC), and most recently Christ Church.

Carol was a talented artist, creating wonderful watercolor, charcoal, and pencil pieces treasured by her family. Her love of the written word was well known in libraries, book clubs and bookstores throughout the Denver metro area. She loved walking and until recently you could find her on a daily stroll near her final home at Clermont Park, Denver, Colorado.

Carol will be greatly missed by her children Matson (Lisa), Meg, and Bryan (Suzie) Sparling and her 8 grandchildren. Carol has a brother Don (Jan) Helphrey of Stanwood, Washington and sister Margaret (Richard) Singer of Lopez Island, Washington. Carol was preceded in death by her husband and her brother Dave (Greta) Helphrey.
