My Grandma Bernie was one of my most favorite people on this Earth. Growing up, going to visit Pop & Bernie was the most exciting part of making a trip to Colorado. When my family lost our home to a fire when is 12, my Grandma Bernie and Pop welcomed my entire family into theirs while my parents pieced things back together. Those were the hardest days for my parents, but for me, they were the absolute best. We got to spend just about every day with my Grandma for the few months we lived there, and she made everyday a fun one. Once we got back on our feet and moved into our own home, I could call her anytime and plan a Thursday or Sunday (those were her days off from the salon) to spend time together. From baking banana nut bread (my favorite!) to “bathing” her lawn ornaments and putting them away or out for the season, to walks around Palmer Lake, trips to the zoo, the North Pole, or a movie, my Grandma Bernie always knew how to have fun with us. Some of my best memories are from these trips, from dodging lion pee at the zoo, to laughing with my brothers and cousins about how Bernie would cry at every movie we ever saw. I think she went through a whole box of tissues when she took us to see the movie “Cool Runnings.” Bernie didn’t just show me a good time, she also showed me what hard work, stubbornness, bravery, and kindness were. I loved watching her at the salon making all those old ladies feel beautiful. She was very dedicated to her clients and her craft, and I always admired that. I once watched her almost cut her finger off with her scissors and then try to put a glove on and finish the lady’s hair before going to the ER. Then when it came time for stitch removal, she cut them out herself! As an adult, my relationship with my grandma only grew. When I lived far away, we made it a point to talk on the phone at least once a month, and when my children and I came to visit, you bet Grandma Bernie had a fun things planned for us to do! Even when her health declined, she was always happy to see me and talk to me, and wanted to make plans for something fun. I wish I could have told her one more time how much she meant to me, and since I didn’t get to, I thought I’d share it with the other people who loved her. Thank you.

There are times in one’s life that they wish things could have been different…and this is one of those times…I wish that circumstances would have been different and we had more of a opportunity to get to know each other better. I always enjoyed our phone calls and I know you alway had love for me. May you rest in peace!
With love,
Miranda
